The book was written to help anyone deal with negative thinking, but has a special section addressing the needs of people with life-threatening illnesses such as AIDS and cancer.

What I appreciate most about this gem is the life-affirming and humorous way Peter McWilliams teaches you how to avoid getting caught up in negative thinking and the many options he gives to work your way out it, if you’re already caught up in cycles of negative thinking.

Even though there is a sequential structure, the book designed so you can start your reading at any point, read a few pages, get some words of wisdom, advice, and inspiration.

However, I suggest that that you read Part One: “The Disease,” first.

Part One is only about 70 pages, and you will get a deep understanding of how negative thinking develops, persists, and affects your life.

Then you get the most complete look into the “fight or flight” response that I’ve seen anywhere.

Part Two: “The Cure,” consists of 87 “mini practices,” divided into three sections; Accentuate The Positive, Eliminate The Negative, and Latch Onto The Affirmative.

What makes this book so useful is that you can pick and choose any of the practices you like, in any order you want.

Choose what you need and ignore the rest.

A few of my favorite practices are:

Live Your Life Now
Strengthen Your Intention To Live
What Do You Want
Learn To Separate Opinion And Projection From Fact
Know The Disease
Focus On The Cure
Getting Out Of Guilt and Resentment
Healing Your Body

Once you read “You Can’t Afford The Luxury Of A Negative Thought’ you’ll see why it is on my mandatory reading list for cancer patients.
